Since the first sin brought into the world through Adam, this world has been fallen, because “sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned” (Romans 5:12 ESV). I can’t help but notice however, that 2 Timothy 3 is becoming very tangibly real: “in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth.”
Homosexuality, Feminism, Gender identity, Abortion. The world’s perspective is in direct opposition to God’s masterful design; and I hate it. Yet at the same time, I find it rather affirming of the faith I’ve placed in Christ. If the world is darkness and with Christ there is light, then those in darkness will naturally exist in the polar opposite design from that which exists in the light — and that’s precisely what is happening. How twistedly affirming!
God created man and woman separately, uniquely, and with different roles. He made the man to lead as the head and the woman to submit in love. As soon as we bring the word “submit” into the picture, feminists roar like lions,”misogynistic jerk!” That’s because unfortunately it has been corrupted into something that it never even implied. Due to the abuse of “submission” — the wife beater, the sex traffickers, the abused slave — we associate this word with those abuses as opposed to its original design. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are three-in-one. Man and woman were made in their likeness and God’s design in marriage and in sexuality was to make us displays of this. It’s a glorious thing! One would dare not say that one of these three parts of God are less than the other. It isn’t a hierarchy of God because they are equally God and equally Divine. They have different roles though. Christ “submits” to the Father’s Will. God the Father sends the Son. Christ sends the Spirit. We see different authorities even, but none are any less God. Likewise, man and woman are different and hold different roles and authorities but they are no less dignified. This was God’s design but this rampant feminist movement seeks to thwart His design. Homosexuality and gender changing surgeries are just as much of an anarchy for the same reasons. Society glorifies and praises people who are “bold” and “brave” enough to wear their sin proudly. However, not only is it because of the uniqueness of each gender created but in exposing these sin issues, another finds itself exposed by the light.
Not only does God delight in making man and woman distinct and yet equal, but he also loves to use that union in the covenant confines of marriage, to bring about a beautiful new human being in His own likeness. He could choose to make humans in His image just pop out of thin air or even fashion some more out of dirt and ribs, but He chooses instead to let us take part in the miracle. Psalms 139 says in verses 13-16,
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth.Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.
It doesn’t take much examination to see how beautiful these words used to describe what’s going on in the womb are. God “knitted” us together in our mother’s womb. We are “fearfully and wonderfully made” — not carelessly and simply made. We were “intricately woven.” God shares something intimate and delightful as he makes another little human. Naturally, the darkness spouts, “No! We want to play God. The truly noble thing it to protect the mother’s right to choice, even if it means murdering the baby!” Society takes it a step further and glorifies the mother’s that murder their babies. Courage, Bravery, Respect, are words used to describe these mothers. Society glorifies anyone who spearheads the mission to dethrone God. Yet another mission to take the perfect design and swap it for a foolish one.
This might tie well with the first issue I brought up, but there are separate things I want to highlight. I’m going through a book called “This Momentary Marriage” by John Piper. It’s all about… well marriage, and God’s design for it. Piper emphasizes the passages in Ephesians 5 and Genesis 2 that talk about how God was the first Father to “give away his daughter” in marriage as he “brought her to the man” (Genesis 2:22). He didn’t make Adam seek her out or hide her somewhere. God presented her to him. When God declares that now “Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” ( genesis 2:24), he is essentially speaking into existence the very first institution of marriage. Paul sheds greater light on this in Ephesians when he says in reference to this that “this mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband.” Marriage is to represent Christ and the Church — the greatest covenant. Christ will NEVER leave nor forsake His church but promises to be with her till the end of the age. Christ refers to himself as the bridegroom coming back for His bride, the Church, and if marriage is supposed to represent Christ’s love and blood marked covenant with His church, how offensive and against this design are the divorces that happen and the adultery exercised while in a covenant marriage. More than just breaking a covenant, it misrepresents Christ. This is all too common in America. America treats marriage so casually — like the next step after moving in together. Not only is moving in together before marriage wrong, but I mean to highlight that treating marriage as a “next step” itself is wrong! The bible is full of temporary and conditional covenants. But when Christ died on that tree for His bride, a new covenant that will last throughout eternity was established. Likewise, marriage ought to last us humans for as long as we live.
For brevity, I will stop here. The social issues plaguing the world are endless. However, just observe the clear pattern here. The dark world takes the Light’s perfect design and swaps it for a new plan they’ve fashioned themselves. In our failing “wisdom” of this world, these designs we come up with seem awesome and noble and that’s why we glorify the gay-pride parade and Caitlyn Jenner. However, “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Proverbs 14:12 ESV). Apart from the wisdom and revelation that comes from the Holy Spirit, God’s design for nearly everything seems ludicrous. This the reason Christians will be accused of being misogynistic, homophobic, sheltered freaks, or whatever they call us. That’s why our own justice system declares a baker or photographer who denies a homosexual service to be the guilty party. God tells us in 2 Timothy that the conditions will only darken and the Light will only be all the more opposed. But our Hope is not on this Earth but in Eternity. One day we will no longer be opposed. We have God who is for us, so who can be against us. It may seem like there have been victories in the missions to thwart God’s perfect plans due to the exercise of our own wills, but God is not surprised by this and the end is written; He wins!
One of the most preached teachings in New Testament Scripture is steadfastness. We Christians are prone to wander and succumb to this world. But we are to be steadfast, immovable. Stand firm Church. Walk in the Light. Sin came into the world through one man, Adam. His sin represented all of mankind. But now there is Christ. A new federal representative. Through this one man, all man can be represented by him, saved, and stand before God righteous.
